The basics in 1 minute

The aim

The batting team tries to score runs while the bowling and fielding team tries to dismiss batters. Teams take turns batting in innings.

Scoring

Runs come from completed runs between the wickets, boundaries and extras. A normal boundary scores 4, or 6 when a struck ball clears it without bouncing. Match format determines innings and winning conditions.

Key rules

  • An over normally contains 6 valid deliveries; wides and no balls do not count.
  • Batters can be out bowled, caught or run out, among other ways.
  • Reach your ground before the wicket is legally broken to avoid a run out.
