Athletics

The basics in 1 minute

The aim

Athletics includes running, jumping and throwing. The aim depends on the event: reach the finish first, jump highest or farthest, or throw farthest.

Scoring

Track races use finish order and time; field events use valid measured performances. Combined events convert performances into points and the highest total wins.

Key rules

  • In a race, the torso crossing the finish-line plane decides the placing, not a hand or foot.
  • Follow the start, lane and interference rules; false-start consequences differ in combined events.
  • Jumps and throws must satisfy event-specific technique, boundary and time-limit rules; failed attempts do not provide a valid mark.
