Rounds and valid results

In the standard format for horizontal jumps and throws, more than 8 athletes receive 3 initial trials; the best 8 with a valid result receive 3 further trials. With 8 or fewer, each normally receives 6 trials. Authorised competition formats may differ. A red flag marks a failed trial; a white flag marks a valid completed trial.

Time limits and ties

Athletes must start each attempt within the applicable time limit, which varies by event, remaining athletes and consecutive attempts. A trial begun before time expires may be completed. The best valid performance decides the result; equal best horizontal-jump or throwing marks are compared by the next-best marks, continuing through the results if necessary.
