Baseball
The basics in 1 minute
The aim
Batters try to become runners and circle the bases, while the defence tries to make outs. Teams alternate batting and fielding.
Scoring
A run normally counts when a runner legally touches every base and home in order. After 3 outs, the batting turn ends. MLB normally plays 9 innings; WBSC event lengths and tie-break procedures vary.
Key rules
- A walk is awarded after 4 balls; 3 strikes normally retire the batter.
- A caught fly ball retires the batter.
- Runners can be put out by a tag or, when forced to advance, a force play.
