Byes and Leg byes
MCC · 2017 Code · 4th edition · 2026Runs without a bat strike and why a batter must attempt a shot or try to avoid the ball for Leg byes.
Law 23 — Byes
If a delivery is not a Wide and passes the striker without touching bat or person, any completed runs or boundary allowance are Byes. On a No ball, the one-run No ball penalty is added separately.
Law 23 — Leg byes
If the ball first strikes the striker’s person, runs are allowed only if the umpire believes the striker tried to play it with the bat or tried to avoid being hit. With no later bat contact, qualifying runs are Leg byes. If it then accidentally touches the bat, the resulting runs belong to the striker. A deliberate lawful second strike follows Law 34 instead.
If neither qualifying attempt was made, the umpire disallows the runs and returns any surviving batter to the original end. Unless the ball otherwise becomes dead, the call is delayed until the first run is completed or the ball reaches the boundary. A No ball penalty and applicable 5-run penalties remain, but the penalty for striking a fielding helmet on the ground is excluded.
