The basics in 1 minute
The aim
In professional MMA, fighters combine legal striking and grappling to win by submission, stoppage or the judges' decision. This guide follows the supplied Unified Rules.
Scoring
Judges prioritise effective striking and grappling. Under the 10-point must system, the round winner normally receives 10 and the opponent fewer; deductions can alter totals.
Key rules
- Fighting continues both standing and on the ground, but prohibited attacks remain fouls.
- Headbutts, eye gouging, groin attacks and grabbing the fence to control position are illegal.
- Obey the referee and stop attacking when action is halted; a physical or verbal submission ends the contest.
