Advice or instruction to a player counts as coaching regardless of its type or how it is delivered. The relevant sanctioning body may permit off-court coaching at events played under the Rules of Tennis.
On-court coaching is available only in team events with a team captain seated on court, and only at times authorised by the sanctioning body. It is prohibited in all other competitions.
If the sanctioning body permits it, players may access approved Player Analysis Technology when coaching is allowed. No coaching is allowed while a point is in progress.
Appendix IV. Permitted times and communication
The following conditions apply only if the sanctioning body has permitted coaching. It may occur between points, at changes of ends and set breaks, and at other authorised times outside the playing of a point.
For off-court coaching, and for on-court coaching between points, communication is limited to speech when the coach and player are at the same end, or hand signals whenever coaching is permitted.
Off-court coaching and on-court coaching between points must be discreet and brief, except that the brevity requirement does not apply during breaks in play.
For this purpose, breaks in play include medical time-outs, toilet breaks, changes of attire, interruptions for weather or light, and other temporary interruptions before the match ends.
