Four chances to advance

A down starts when the ball is put into play and ends when it becomes dead. The offense normally has 4 downs to gain 10 yards and earn a new series. If the goal line is nearer than 10 yards, the target is that goal line.

Possession matters

A fumble means a player loses possession; a muff means an unsuccessful attempt to gain possession of a loose ball. A catch requires control, both feet or another body part except the hands inbounds, and a football action or enough time to perform one. Merely touching the ball is not possession.
