Penalty enforcement

In short

Why the same yardage penalty can produce different outcomes.

Accepting a penalty

The offended team can usually decline a penalty and keep the play’s result. An accepted penalty can repeat the down, award an automatic first down or include loss of down, depending on the foul. Disqualification still applies when a penalty is declined. Multiple fouls by one team do not normally mean adding every yardage penalty together.

Where enforcement starts

The starting point may be the previous spot, foul spot, end of the play or another prescribed location. Possession changes and fouls after the play affect the calculation. Penalties that would exceed half the distance to the offender’s goal are generally limited to half that distance, subject to stated exceptions. Offsetting fouls often replay the down, but there are exceptions.
