Pitching and balks
MLB · 2025Legal delivery, pickoff throws and the protection against illegal deception.
Legal delivery
The pitcher may use a windup or set position. A set delivery with runners requires a complete stop; with empty bases that stop is not required. Once committed to the pitch, the pitcher must deliver without an illegal interruption. A throw to a base while on the rubber requires a direct step toward it; stepping backward off the rubber makes the pitcher a fielder.
Illegal action
With runners, illegal delivery or prohibited deception can be a balk, ordinarily awarding each runner a base. Examples include failing to deliver after committing, an illegal quick pitch and feinting to first or third while on the rubber. Play can stand if the batter reaches first and every runner advances. Foreign substances and intentional throwing at a batter have separate disciplinary consequences.
