Umpires and conduct
MLB · 2025Authority, rule questions, discipline and the limits of this source.
Decisions and corrections
Umpires enforce the rules and judge balls, strikes, fair or foul and safe or out. Judgment decisions are final under the rulebook’s ordinary process. A manager may ask the umpire who made a decision to reconsider a possible rules error; umpires may consult colleagues, but another umpire does not simply overrule the original decision.
Conduct and separate procedures
Abuse, physical contact with an umpire and prohibited unsporting actions can lead to ejection. Ejected personnel must leave the playing area as required. Electronic communication for sign stealing is prohibited. This article does not invent replay-challenge quotas or pitch-timer settings: those supplemental operational policies are not fully established by the supplied Official Baseball Rules.
