Running the bases and making outs
MLB · 2025Force plays, tags, overrunning first and runner responsibilities.
Touching bases
Runners must touch bases in order and retouch in reverse order when returning. A force exists when the batter becoming a runner removes another runner’s right to occupy a base. The defense can force that runner out by touching the required base while securely holding the ball; when the force disappears, a tag may be necessary.
Avoiding a tag
A runner is out for moving more than 3 feet from the established base path to evade a tag, except while avoiding a fielder fielding a batted ball. Passing a preceding runner also causes an out. A batter-runner may overrun first and return promptly without liability, but an attempt toward second removes that protection. Standing on a base does not excuse interference.
