Team competitions
The R&A / USGA · 2023The Committee defines team scoring and any permitted advice arrangements.
Competition conditions and captain
Players or sides combine their match or round results into a team result. The Committee sets the format, which scores count, points for matches and how ties are resolved. A team captain can arrange selection, order and partnerships, and may also be a competing player. Playing for the same team does not automatically make players partners under the rules.
Advice is not automatically allowed
Except between partners, playing team members may not exchange advice merely because they share a team. A Local Rule may authorize a designated advice giver, identified to the Committee before giving advice. A competing advice giver cannot act in that role while playing their own round. Additional Local Rules can allow particular arrangements. Breaching the advice restriction brings the general penalty; check the event’s actual conditions.
