Short track
The basics in 1 minute
The aim
Race around a short ice oval and finish ahead of your opponents without breaking the racing rules. Individual races and relays use a shared track.
Scoring
Finishing order and the published qualification schedule determine progress through the rounds. The main final decides the winner; penalties can change the apparent result.
Key rules
- Follow the starter’s commands, stay still and wait for the signal. Major ISU and Olympic events do not allow a free false start.
- Overtake safely, do not impede opponents and move outside when about to be lapped.
- Wear the required protection. In relays, exchange by touch and follow the final-lap or mixed-relay restrictions.
