Distances and event types

ISU · 2026
In short

Standard individual races cover 500, 1000 and 1500 m. Short track is a mass-start sport with individual, relay and team formats. Competitors race one another within heats, so position and qualification matter alongside speed. A quick time in an earlier round does not automatically make someone the event winner.

The rule

Competitors race one another within heats, so position and qualification matter alongside speed. A quick time in an earlier round does not automatically make someone the event winner.

In practice

Senior championship relays cover 3000 m for women and 5000 m for men; mixed relays cover 2000 m. Junior and other international programs can differ. Always check the announced event program instead of assuming that every competition uses the same distances and qualification format.
