Speed skating

The basics in 1 minute

The aim

Complete the prescribed long-track distance with the fastest valid time. Team events and mass start use their own race formats.

Scoring

Individual distances compare all competitors’ times. Allround and sprint combinations reward the lowest converted points total; mass start can use sprint points and finishing order.

Key rules

  • Wait motionless for the start signal. After a first false start, the next offender in the pair is disqualified, even if the earlier warning was the opponent’s.
  • In paired races, change lanes on the crossing straight. The skater moving from inside to outside must not obstruct the skater coming inward.
  • Complete the correct laps, respect lane markings and avoid interference. The leading skate’s blade decides the finish; team pursuit counts the third finisher.
