Disciplines and winning

ISU · 2026
In short

Long-track speed skating includes individual distances, allround and sprint combinations, mass start and team events. In ordinary individual races, the fastest valid time across the whole field wins: beating the other skater in your pair does not automatically mean winning the competition. The announced programme determines which distances and formats apply.

Long-track speed skating includes individual distances, allround and sprint combinations, mass start and team events. In ordinary individual races, the fastest valid time across the whole field wins: beating the other skater in your pair does not automatically mean winning the competition. Allround and sprint combinations use converted time points, with the lowest total winning. Mass start can use sprint points and finishing order, while team races have their own finish and exchange rules. This guide follows the supplied ISU Sports Rules dated June 2026; short track is a separate sport with different racing rules.
