Sailing

The basics in 1 minute

The aim

Use wind and water to sail the prescribed course, pass the marks correctly and finish ahead of the fleet; handicap events may use corrected times.

Scoring

In standard low-point scoring, first place earns 1 point, second 2 and so on. The lowest series total wins, with exclusions and penalties determined by the event rules.

Key rules

  • Port-tack boats keep clear of starboard-tack boats; on the same tack, windward keeps clear of leeward when overlapped.
  • Give required room at marks and obstructions, avoid contact and take the appropriate penalty after an infringement.
  • Help anyone in danger and use a boat, sails and equipment that comply with the class rules and event documents.
