Class rules and equipment certificates

World Sailing · 2025–2028
In short

The Equipment Rules of Sailing provide shared terminology and control methods; they do not prescribe a universal hull size, sail area or minimum boat weight. Those limits normally come from the applicable class or rating rules. Closed class rules permit only what they specifically allow; open class rules permit what they do not prohibit.

The rule

The Equipment Rules of Sailing provide shared terminology and control methods; they do not prescribe a universal hull size, sail area or minimum boat weight. Those limits normally come from the applicable class or rating rules. Closed class rules permit only what they specifically allow; open class rules permit what they do not prohibit.

In practice

A boat must hold the certificate required by its class or certification authority and comply with it. Certification records successful equipment control, while event inspection checks compliance for a particular competition. A certificate is not permission to race with subsequently altered equipment outside the rules. Check which documents and markings the event requires before presenting the boat for inspection.
