World Sailing · 2025–2028
In short

The rule

The standard low-point system awards 1 point for first place, 2 for second and so on. The lowest series total wins. Under the default series calculation, the worst race score is excluded, but the notice of race or sailing instructions may specify a different number of exclusions or none at all.

In practice

Boats that fail to start, finish or sail the course can receive a score worse than ordinary finishing places. Some penalties cannot be discarded. A tie is resolved using the prescribed scoring procedure, not simply the latest winner in every situation. Handicap or rating events use corrected times to establish places before points are assigned.
