Following the marked route

Cross country uses natural terrain and obstacles appropriate to the competition. Athletes must follow the marked course; taking a shortcut leads to disqualification. The layout and conditions can vary, so identical distances on different courses do not imply identical difficulty. Start, finish and refreshment arrangements must protect athletes and allow fair competition.

Trail-specific requirements

Mountain and trail races use predominantly natural terrain; paved sections must not exceed 25% of the total length. Organisers specify compulsory equipment and race-specific requirements. Shortcuts, prohibited pacing, supplies outside official aid stations or other breaches can lead to disqualification or the stated event penalty. Athletes must follow safety instructions and the clearly marked route.
