Barriers and water jumps

The 3000 m steeplechase has 28 barrier jumps and 7 water jumps. The 2000 m event has 18 barrier jumps and 5 water jumps. Barriers are fixed obstacles rather than hurdles designed to fall over; athletes may step on them while clearing them.

Completing the course

Athletes must clear every barrier and go over or through each water jump. Stepping to one side of the water jump or passing a foot or leg beside a barrier below its top is a fault. The course layout determines the exact lap distance, because the water jump can lie inside or outside the normal track.
