Qualification and heats

An interval-start qualification selects competitors for elimination heats. The event regulations determine the heat structure; major championships and World Cup use quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final.

Advancement and fouls

Heat placing and, where applicable, times determine advancement. A first false start brings a written reprimand; a further false start by any competitor in that heat requires withdrawal.
