Required and permitted kit

Players wear a jersey, shorts and underwear, socks and boots. All clothing must comply with World Rugby’s equipment regulation. Permitted additional items include mouthguards, compliant headgear, shoulder or approved chest pads, goggles, fingerless mitts, supports and player-monitoring devices. Permission is conditional on the item meeting the applicable requirements and not creating danger.

Prohibited and dangerous items

Jewellery, gloves, communication devices, blood-contaminated items and sharp or abrasive objects are prohibited. The referee may order any dangerous or illegal item removed; the player cannot participate until it is removed or made harmless. A player who wears a prohibited item after being told at the pre-match inspection to remove it is sent off for misconduct; a penalty is awarded.
