Playing charter and key terms
World Rugby · 2026The values, objectives and vocabulary behind rugby union.
Playing within the spirit of rugby
Rugby combines a contest for possession with the attempt to keep play flowing. Teams advance and score by carrying, passing, kicking and grounding the ball within the laws. Physical pressure in a lawful contest does not justify deliberate injury. Integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline and respect guide players, coaches, captains and officials. The charter asks participants to understand the laws and respect officials, while officials apply them fairly, consistently and with appropriate judgement. Different physiques and abilities contribute to the game; teamwork and sporting behaviour remain central.
Understanding the vocabulary
The field of play excludes its boundary try lines and touchlines. In-goal includes the try line but excludes the dead-ball line and touch-in-goal lines. A drop-kick means dropping the ball and kicking it as it rises from its initial bounce. Binding requires a firm grip on another player between shoulders and hips, with the whole arm in contact. Advantage must provide a clear, real tactical or territorial benefit. These definitions explain rugby union terminology; they do not introduce a separate playing format.
