Advancement after an incident

ISU · 2026
In short

An impeded skater will advance when another skater receives a sanction for the incident and the victim was in a direct qualifying position at that moment. Qualification potentially available only through time does not count for this protection. In semi-finals, protection of a B-final qualifying position leads to advancement to the B final.

The rule

An impeded skater will advance when another skater receives a sanction for the incident and the victim was in a direct qualifying position at that moment. Qualification potentially available only through time does not count for this protection. In semi-finals, protection of a B-final qualifying position leads to advancement to the B final.

In practice

The referee also has wider discretion to advance a skater or team prevented from qualifying through circumstances not caused directly or indirectly by them. A fall alone guarantees nothing. Outside finals, a previously unreviewed incident can be reviewed after the round solely for advancement, without changing an infringement decision.
