Stopped races and reruns

ISU · 2026
In short

Interference before the last block of the first bend after the start leads to a recall; the referee decides whether it was also a racing infringement. Later irregularities affecting the result can lead to a restart, or a rerun if the distance has already been completed. These are officials’ decisions, not a competitor’s automatic entitlement.

The rule

Interference before the last block of the first bend after the start leads to a recall; the referee decides whether it was also a racing infringement. Later irregularities affecting the result can lead to a restart, or a rerun if the distance has already been completed. These are officials’ decisions, not a competitor’s automatic entitlement.

In practice

A competitor sanctioned for conduct before the stoppage does not take part in the rerun. If a race was stopped to protect a skater’s wellbeing, that skater normally cannot restart; clear technical causes beyond their control have a specified exception. Relay teams may substitute members when restarting, subject to the team rules.
