Qualification and finals

ISU · 2026
In short

Major events progress through elimination rounds towards the finals. Depending on entries, the schedule may include heats, quarter-finals, semi-finals and repechage. Repechage offers another route into a later qualifying round for some initially eliminated skaters; it is not an automatic second chance for every participant.

The rule

Major events progress through elimination rounds towards the finals. Depending on entries, the schedule may include heats, quarter-finals, semi-finals and repechage. Repechage offers another route into a later qualifying round for some initially eliminated skaters; it is not an automatic second chance for every participant.

In practice

The main final decides the winner of the distance, while the B final determines the next places. Distance classification places main-final competitors ahead of B-final competitors, following the applicable finish and sanction rules. Earlier qualifying performances help classify other skaters but do not replace the result of the decisive final.
