The rule

Each mixed relay race uses two women and two men over 2000 m, equivalent to 18 laps. Exchanges follow the fixed sequence woman, woman, man, man, repeated for the race. Teams choose the order within each gender, but cannot freely change the prescribed gender sequence for tactical reasons.

In practice

The schedule begins with 4 segments of 2.5 laps, followed by 4 segments of 2 laps. A fall generally requires a teammate of the same gender to complete the segment, with specific exceptions near a scheduled change and at the end of the race. Apply those exceptions rather than treating every fall as a free substitution.
