Staying within the lane

ISU · 2026
In short

Skaters must remain in their designated lane. Completely crossing a lane boundary with the whole skate can bring disqualification even without contact, and repeated confirmed crossings lead to disqualification unless an exception applies. Cutting the inner line of a curve or moving its marking blocks with the skate is forbidden.

The rule

Skaters must remain in their designated lane. Completely crossing a lane boundary with the whole skate can bring disqualification even without contact, and repeated confirmed crossings lead to disqualification unless an exception applies. Cutting the inner line of a curve or moving its marking blocks with the skate is forbidden.

In practice

The rules recognise limited exceptions, including a direct return after an accidental departure and certain immediate returns from the outer lane. A safe overtaking manoeuvre may also cross a boundary without shortening the distance. These exceptions are not permission to gain distance, ignore the lane markings or interfere with another competitor.
