The track and racing lanes
ISU · 2026A standard long-track oval has an inner and an outer racing lane, a crossing straight and marked curves. Racing is counterclockwise, with the inside of the track on the skater’s left. Ordinary individual distances are skated in pairs in separate lanes, rather than in a shared pack. Major ISU, World Cup and Olympic competitions use a 400m track.
The rule

Ordinary individual distances are skated in pairs in separate lanes, rather than in a shared pack. Major ISU, World Cup and Olympic competitions use a 400m track.
In practice
The lane drawn for the start is not a permanent assignment for the whole race: skaters exchange lanes on the crossing straight under the applicable procedure. Mass start and team competitions use different arrangements. Follow the marked competition track and the event format instead of applying the paired-race layout to every speed-skating event.
