Dimensions and goals

Indoor handball is played on a 40 × 20 m rectangle. Goals have an internal width of 3 m and height of 2 m and must be securely fixed. A safety zone should extend at least 1 m beside each sideline and 2 m behind each goal line. Lines belong to the areas they enclose; the goal line between the posts is 8 cm wide, while other lines are 5 cm wide.

Lines and playing areas

The goal-area boundary is the 6 m line. The broken free-throw line lies 3 m farther out, at 9 m; the 7 m line marks the penalty-throw position. The goalkeeper’s 4 m line matters during those throws. Each substitution line extends 4.5 m from halfway. A central throw-off circle has a diameter of 4 m: it is compulsory at IHF events and senior professional leagues, but optional for other events covered by the rule’s exception.
