Privileges inside the area

When defending inside the goal area, the goalkeeper may use any body part to stop the ball. The usual court-player limits on steps and holding the ball do not apply there, but the goalkeeper must not delay the goalkeeper throw. Leaving the area without the ball is allowed; the goalkeeper then follows court-player rules. Leaving with a ball that has not come under body or ball control is also permitted.

Limits and leaving the area

The goalkeeper may not endanger opponents, leave with the ball under control, return into the area carrying it, or reach from inside for a ball lying or rolling outside. Nor may the goalkeeper bring such a ball into the area or use the foot/lower leg on a ball moving outward. During a 7 m throw, one foot must remain on or behind the 4 m restraining line until release; another body part may extend across it in the air.
