The seven-metre throw

A clear scoring chance
A seven-metre throw normally restores a clear scoring chance illegally destroyed by an opponent, anywhere on the court. It is not awarded for every foul near goal. If the attacker keeps full control of body and ball and can still use the chance, play continues; a later missed shot does not create a penalty retrospectively. External interference, an unwarranted whistle and specified last-thirty-second offences can also justify the throw.
Taking the shot
The thrower stands behind the 7 m line, no more than 1 m behind it, and shoots within three seconds of the whistle. The line may not be touched or crossed before release. Teammates remain outside the free-throw line; opponents also stay at least 3 m from the 7 m line. If opponents encroach, or the goalkeeper crosses the 4 m restraining line early, repeat an unsuccessful shot without a personal penalty for that encroachment. The attacking team cannot play the ball again until it touches an opponent or the goal. A time-out is not automatic.
