When and where it is awarded

A throw-in follows the ball completely crossing a side line, touching the ceiling or an overhead fixture, or crossing the outer goal line after the last touch by a defending court player. The opponents of the last player to touch the ball take it. For a side-line exit, restart at the exit point. For an outer-goal-line exit, use that side’s corner. After ceiling contact, use the nearest point on the nearest side line. A goalkeeper’s last touch over the outer goal line instead normally produces a goalkeeper throw.

Feet and defensive distance

A throw-in normally needs no whistle, although the general restart rules provide exceptions. The thrower keeps one foot on the side line until releasing the ball; the second foot may be placed anywhere. Opponents normally stay at least three metres away. They may be closer when standing immediately outside their own goal-area line. These position requirements distinguish the handball throw-in from a football throw-in.
