Match length and extra time
For players aged 16 and over, normal playing time is two 30-minute halves. The youth categories 12–16 and 8–12 play two 25-minute and two 20-minute halves respectively. Half-time normally lasts 10 minutes; authorised variations may not exceed 15. If a winner is required after a draw, extra time starts after a 5-minute break and consists of two 5-minute halves with a 1-minute interval. A second identical extra-time period may follow; competition rules determine the next tie-break.
Stopping the clock
The clock must stop for a two-minute suspension, disqualification, team time-out, timekeeper/delegate whistle or necessary referee consultation. The standard allowance is one 1-minute team time-out per half, requested in possession, and none in extra time. Competitions may instead allow three per match, at most two per half and only one in the final five minutes. A foul before or with the final signal may still require a free throw or 7 m throw afterwards.
