The two-bounce rule

USA Pickleball / GPF · 2026
In short

The receiver must let the serve bounce before returning it. The serving side must then let that return bounce before playing its first shot. A volley on either of those first two returns loses the rally.

The rule

The receiver must let the serve bounce before returning it. The serving side must then let that return bounce before playing its first shot. A volley on either of those first two returns loses the rally.

In practice

After these opening bounces, players may volley outside the non-volley zone or play after one bounce. In ordinary standing play, the ball must be returned before a second bounce on that end of the court.
