The rule
For a serve struck before the ball bounces, the paddle must move upward at contact. Its highest point must not be above the wrist joint, and contact must not be above waist height.
In practice
At contact, at least one foot touches the correct serving area, with neither foot on the court or outside that area. Serve diagonally beyond the non-volley zone. A net touch does not require a replay if the serve lands legally; a faulty serve does not earn a routine second attempt.
