Tyres and compound use

In short

Allocation, returns and race use depend on the session and weather.

Allocated sets

Drivers use their allocated, identified tyres and follow the supplier’s operating instructions. Quantities and return deadlines depend on the weekend format and tyre-testing arrangements. Sets normally contain matching specifications. Electronic return is followed by physical return before the next session; a returned set is not simply available for reuse.

Dry races and rain

Unless intermediate or wet tyres are used during the race, at least two different dry specifications are required, including a mandatory race specification. Non-compliance normally means disqualification; a suspended race that cannot restart has a specified time-penalty exception. Rain tyres in practice require a wet-track declaration. Wet safety-car starts have additional compulsory wet-tyre requirements.
