Fleet racing and the rulebooks

World Sailing · 2025–2028
In short

Sailing races test how efficiently crews use wind and water to complete a prescribed course. In ordinary fleet racing, boats compete together, starting, passing marks in order and finishing correctly. The Racing Rules of Sailing work alongside class rules, the notice of race and sailing instructions; reading only a general summary is not enough.

This guide explains the supplied fleet-racing framework and equipment terminology. Match racing, team racing, windsurfing and other specialised formats have additional or changed rules. Handicap racing may rank boats by corrected time rather than arrival order. Check the event documents for the course, eligible boats, signals and scoring arrangements.
