Safety, flotation and helping others

World Sailing · 2025–2028
In short

Boats and competitors must give all possible help to people or vessels in danger. Each boat is responsible for deciding whether to race or continue, and must carry adequate lifesaving equipment unless class provisions say otherwise. Each competitor is personally responsible for wearing flotation suitable for the conditions; a wetsuit is not a flotation device.

The rule

Boats and competitors must give all possible help to people or vessels in danger. Each boat is responsible for deciding whether to race or continue, and must carry adequate lifesaving equipment unless class provisions say otherwise. Each competitor is personally responsible for wearing flotation suitable for the conditions; a wetsuit is not a flotation device.

In practice

Flag Y and applicable class or event rules can make wearing personal flotation compulsory. The timing and location of the flag determine when that obligation applies. A boat whose result is seriously worsened by giving required assistance may qualify for redress. Rescue comes before racing; a possible scoring adjustment is considered later through the proper process.
