Early starts and recall flags

World Sailing · 2025–2028
In short

An individual recall uses flag X when boats are over early or must correct an applicable starting infringement. A general recall restarts the fleet when identification or the procedure has failed. Returning is not always enough: the preparatory flag determines whether extra starting restrictions or disqualification apply to an identified boat.

The rule

An individual recall uses flag X when boats are over early or must correct an applicable starting infringement. A general recall restarts the fleet when identification or the procedure has failed. Returning is not always enough: the preparatory flag determines whether extra starting restrictions or disqualification apply to an identified boat.

In practice

With flag I, a boat on the course side during the final minute must return around a line extension. Flag U can disqualify a boat in the prohibited triangle, but that disqualification does not survive a restart or resail. A black-flag infringement can survive those restarts. Read the displayed flags before choosing a recovery route.
