Table tennis / Rule 2.15
The expedite system
ITTF · 2026In short
When time limits change service and reward sustained returns.
When it starts
Expedite starts after 10 minutes of play in a game, or earlier if both sides request it, but cannot be introduced once at least 18 points have been scored in that game. Once introduced, it lasts for the remainder of the match and preserves the match’s opening service and reception sequence.
How play continues
If a rally is interrupted to start expedite, its server serves again; between rallies, the previous receiver serves. Thereafter service changes every 1 point. The receiving player or pair wins a rally by completing 13 correct returns. The rule therefore places pressure on the server to finish the rally.
