The finishing order matters

The finish classification follows the order in which riders cross the line; it determines prizes and points. Photo-finish equipment supports the decision. A rider can therefore finish ahead of another rider in the results even when both receive the same recorded time.

Riders in the same bunch

Riders crossing the line in the same bunch receive the same time under the road-race rule. Recorded road-race times are rounded down to whole seconds. The timekeeper continues recording finishers, including those outside the deadline, and reports them to the commissaires.
