Finishing within the limit

The one-day road-race rule excludes a rider whose time exceeds the winner's by more than 8%, subject to an exceptional extension by commissaires with the organiser. Stage races instead publish a stage-specific finishing limit. Exceptional reinstatement after a late stage finish can remove points from secondary classifications.

Leaving the race

A rider who abandons must remove and surrender the body number and must not cross the finish line as a competitor. Unless injured or seriously ill, the rider travels in the broom wagon. A rider abandoning a stage race cannot normally enter another cycling event while that stage race continues; a UCI exception is possible.
