A competition across several days
A stage race lasts at least 2 days and has an overall time classification. It can combine road stages and time trials. Road stages normally follow the one-day race rules, while time-trial stages follow their own rules; a prologue, when held, counts towards the overall time.
Winning a stage is not winning overall
The overall individual classification uses the recorded stage times, with applicable bonuses and sanctions. A rider can lead overall without winning the latest stage. For an overall tie, fractions from individual time trials are considered first, followed by stage placings and finally the placing in the last stage.
