Intentional or accidental

Interference occurs when a player’s action distracts an opponent while the opponent executes a shot. Deliberate interference costs the offending pair the point. For the first involuntary interference, the umpire calls a let and the point is replayed rather than awarded.

Repeated interference

A second unintentional interference by the same pair costs that pair the point. The distinction is therefore not simply intentional versus accidental: an accidental action can also lose the point when repeated. Officials assess the interference during the opponent’s shot.
