Cadet-specific restrictions

IJF · 2026
In short

Cadet events impose additional protections. Using the head to throw or defend attracts shido, and the specified reverse seoi-nage is not scored and is penalised. These restrictions do not mean all ordinary seoi-nage techniques are forbidden; the rule distinguishes controllable techniques from the prohibited variation.

The rule

In practice

A cadet competing in a junior or senior event follows that event's age-group rules. National youth competitions may have further adaptations, so check the actual event rather than transferring adult rules automatically. Medical consequences of a strangle-induced loss of consciousness also receive special cadet treatment. This guide is an overview, not an exhaustive youth coaching rulebook.
