The rule

Hansoku-make can follow accumulated shido or be awarded directly for a serious infringement. It ends the contest in the opponent's favour. Dangerous head-diving, prohibited techniques and actions threatening the opponent's neck or spine are among the situations covered by the rules; the precise classification determines the consequences.

In practice

Losing this contest does not always mean exclusion from the entire event. Some categories of hansoku-make allow further participation when the competition format permits it; acts against the spirit of judo do not. Officials must consult through the prescribed process. Never assume every direct disqualification has identical tournament consequences.
