In practice
The foul lines define the sides of fair territory; the lines themselves are fair. First base uses a double base to help separate the batter-runner and fielder on qualifying plays. Ground rules and boundaries are reviewed before play. Do not assume baseball field dimensions or one adult pitching distance apply to every softball competition.
